Stocky, bespectacled cinematographer, a master of both black-and-white and early colour photography, who worked eight times with director John Huston and won an Oscar for his work on Fiddler on the Roof. He began as a clapper boy in 1932, progressing to assistant cameraman before war service as a bomber pilot. His many solo credits began in post-war years and include Golden Salamander (1949), Cairo Road (1950), Moulin Rouge (1952), Beau Brummell (1954), Moby Dick (1956), Heaven Knows, Mr Allison (1957), Look Back in Anger (1959), The Guns of Navarone (1961), Lolita (1962), The Pumpkin Eater (1964), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Oliver! (1968), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Sleuth (1972), The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), The Man Who Would Be King (1975), The Wiz (1978), The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and The Dark Crystal (1982), his last.
