Peppy, vivacious, glamorous blonde American actress who ran up nearly 40 (mostly starring) credits in 10 movie years and breathed life into many an ailing 'B' picture of the 1940s. The daughter of a politician, the elegant Knox, born Elsie Kornbrath, worked for the art and fashion departments of Vogue magazine, before modelling led to a film career: Wake Up and Live (1937), Lillian Russell (1940), Footlight Fever (1941), Arabian Nights (1942), The Mummy's Tomb (1942), Hit the Ice (1943), Follow the Boys (1944), Joe Palooka, Champ (1946) - one of her five films about the comic boxer - Black Gold (1947), Linda Be Good (1947), I Wouldn't Be in Your Shoes (1948) and Forgotten Women (1949). Her last film was one of her biggest and best: There's a Girl in My Heart (1949). Her son is TV's NCIS star, Mark Harmon, the offspring of her 45-year marriage to football great Tom Harmon.
