In turn painter, drummer in a band, set designer and art director, the slightly-built Fuest became known in early middle age as a noted director of horror films, particularly the two involving Vincent Price's disfigured madman Dr Phibes. He was also at the helm for many of the best episodes in TV's The Avengers series. His first film as director was Just Like a Woman (1966), followed by ...and Soon the Darkness (1969), Wuthering Heights (1970), The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971), Dr Phibes Rises Again (1972), The Final Programme/The Last Days of Man on Earth (1973), The Devil's Rain (1975), the TV movie Revenge of the Stepford Wives (1980) and Aphrodite (1982), his last. He also wrote or co-wrote screenplays for several of his films.
