Hostel: Part II (DQ)

7/10

Stars: Lauren German, Roger Bart, Bijou Phillips, Richard Burgi, Heather Matarazzo, Vera Jordanova, Jordan Ladd

Director: Eli Roth

Although not the best advert for the Slovak Tourist Board, this is good fun for gorehounds and an improvement on Roth's first Hostel film, functioning better as a story.

In the depths of the Slovakian countryside lies a catacomb-like building where rich Americans come to torture and kill unsuspecting backpackers who have been kidnapped for their pleasure.

With the sole survivor of the first movie (Jay Hernandez) safely dispatched early on, the victims this time prove to be three female art students (Graham, Phillips, Matarazzo) who find themselves whisked off by men in black and trussed up ready for the sadistic few who have bought them as part of an auction.

Two are eventually killed, but the third turns the tables on her torturer in a fashion grisly enough to satisfy the most bloodthirsty of horror fans. Film buffs with long memories may recognise Edwige Fenech, soft-porn sensation of the Seventies, as the girls' art class professor. Bizarre casting, perhaps, but then she did once play the title role in an offering called Sexy Schoolteacher!
