Go With Me
Stars: Julia Stiles, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Liotta, Alexander Ludwig, Hal Holbrook, Lochlyn Munro
Director: Daniel Alfredson
Stiles, once box-office hot at the time of Save the Last Dance for Me, has fallen from favour since then, probably the reason this decent, Scandi-style thriller has gone straight to DVD. Grimly, coldly set in the bleak Pacific northwest - the grey and grimy photography is enough to chill you to the bone - the story, titled Blackway in the States, centres on Lillian (Stiles), a waitress being terrorised by a psycho-ex-cop turned local crime boss (Liotta).
She fights back with the help of woodsman Lester (Hopkins), who's tougher than he looks, and the younger Nate (Ludwig).
Director Alfredson made two of The Girl Who... films in his native Sweden (but also Kidnapping Freddy Heineken, also with Hopkins). However, despite good performances, this feels too cobbled-together for its intended tension to really bite. It does move at a fair lick, though, helping you to overlook the predictable nature of its plot.
