Made of Honor
Stars: Patrick Dempsey, Michelle Monaghan, Kevin McKidd, Kadeem Hardison, Chris Messina, James B Sikking
Director: Paul Weiland
Womanising rich guy Tom (Dempsey) is in love with Hannah (Monaghan), the best friend of 10 years who rejected him at college - but he's only just beginning to realise it. Just as Tom is ready to pop the question, Hannah, away on a business trip to Scotland, tells him she's fallen for a Scottish duke (McKidd) and is all set to get married. Will Tom be her maid of honour? (sorry, can't explain the spelling 'made' in the title).
This, of course, is crazy, but it's the only complication offered by a plot whose ending is so obvious you want to scream. And Dempsey is so wet you really pray for the girl to marry manly McKidd - even though you know there's no chance of it happening.
Oscar nominee Kathleen Quinlan is in this with almost nothing to do, as is eminence grise Sydney Pollack, as Dempsey's father, about to embark on his sixth marriage with a wife who turns up 'drunk as the night I first met her'. Such dialogue felicities are, alas, all too rare in a romcom so standard it hurts.
