Smallfoot

7/10

Stars: Voices: Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Danny DeVito, Gina Rodriguez

Director: Karey Kirkpatrick

That hairy monster movie staple The Yeti aka Bigfoot, The Abominable Snowman and Sasquatch, which has been stomping the screen since 1954's The Snow Creature, is back again but with nothing really monstrous about him in this cheerful animated comedy-musical-adventure which sees the now far-from-abominable creatures singing, dancing and generally seeking to enchant monsters rather than trying to scare them shirtless.

Here the hairy Yetis are living happily in the snows of the Himalayas where, as scripted by Karey Kirkpatrick and Clare Sera, they're far from frightening and given to extravagant musical numbers.

When young Yeti hero Migo (voiced by Tatum) witnesses a plane crash in the snow and sees its human pilot escape he believes he has finally seen the legendary Smallfoot - but his fellow villagers do not credit him with telling the truth, leaving Migo to track down Smallfoot and prove he isn't just crazy...

Director Kilpatrick delivers an enjoyable blend of attractively animated sentiment, pratfalls, song and dance that, despite the patently hirsute Yetis, are never hair-raising. Youngsters will enjoy themselves while - for once - accompanying adults might well avoid sleep and join in the fun.
