Crazy Rich Asians

6/10

Stars: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Nico Santos, Lisa Lu, Ken Jeong

Director: Jon M Chu

This worldwide hit will make Warner Brothers an absolute mint, so the fact that it isn't actually all that good seems almost beside the point. Colourful, however, it is.

New York economics professor Rachel Chu (Wu) agrees to the request of boyfriend Nick (Golding) to travel to Singapore for his brother's wedding.

What she doesn't realise is that his family is by far the richest in the area, and practically royalty, with a palatial mansion worth billions alone.

Alas, on arrival, everybody but her old university friend (Awkwafina, along for the comedy relief) and her boyfriend seems to have it in for her - not least his mother (Yeoh), who actually tells Rachel that 'you will never be enough'.

But we know the lovebirds will end up together because they're the two prettiest people in the picture.

The title more properly in the UK would read Filthy Rich Asians, since nobody is particularly crazy here, merely unhappy, unpleasant or bland.

The film's a mite slow too, but the music swings it along, the Singapore backdrops are breathtakingly sumptuous and the billionaire's interior settings as opulent as you could wish. CRA2 is already in the works and who can blame them?
