Baby Driver

6/10

Stars: Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Eiza Gonzalez, Jamie Foxx, Jon Bernthal, Flea

Director: Edgar Wright

Nobody puts this Baby in a corner. And, if they did, he'd probably drive his way out of it. It's not clear what hold gang leader Doc (Spacey) has on his youthful getaway driver (Elgort). But, even after 'one last bank job', where he helps his colleagues make a sensational escape, Baby, even though all debts are squared off with his boss, is called back for another heist.

'What's it gonna be,' snarls Spacey threateningly. 'Behind the wheel, or in a wheelchair?'.

But Baby, who has music permanently plugged into his ears - 'Tinnitus,' explains Spacey: 'hum in a drum' - has met a waitress (James) who has taken an order for his heart.

And he's further beset by 'co-workers' Hamm and Foxx who trust him no further than the next squeal of wheels. The consequent film is all action, staccato dialogue and soundtrack songs, with occasional monosyllabic pauses.

Committed performances from all concerned, apart perhaps from Spacey, who seems to be phoning it in on the way to collecting backing for his next venture on stage. Fast-car action aficionados will be in seventh heaven: there's no depth to the movie, but they won't care two toots.
