Overnight, The (DQ)

1/10

Stars: Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling, Adam Scott, Judith Godrèche

Director: Patrick Brice

This is the kind of film that years ago you had to put on a grubby mac and slink furtively into the cinema to see. Nowadays it passes as art.

Newbies to LA, Alex and Emily (Scott, Schilling), who have a somewhat strange, not to mention strained sex life, take their small son (R J Hermes) to the local park playground where they meet the rather louche Kurt (Schwartzman) and his French wife (Godrèche), whose son makes friends with their own.

Invited for dinner on the spot, Alex and Emily soon find the evening developing into a pot-fuelled orgy, with skinny-dipping, much discussion of penises and other candid chat, culminating in partner swapping on a grand scale.

In a break, Mrs Kurt takes Emily to see what she does out of hours at her local massage parlour. Ho hum.

Apart from its voyeuristic elements, the film has little entertainment value (apart from giggling at the prosthetic genitalia on display), its concentration on sexual subjects leaving little room for witty repartee. It's just titillation masquerading as a smart take on modern mores, which is how some blinkered critics may accept it.

At least it's short, even if it doesn't seem it.
