Lucky Number Slevin

7/10

Stars: Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Sir Ben Kingsley, Lucy Liu, Stanley Tucci

Director: Paul McGuigan

Despite his relaxed, happy-go-lucky nature, Slevin (Hartnett) is having a bad day. His apartment building has been condemned. He catches his girlfriend in bed with another man. And then he's mugged in the street. Could it get any worse?

Well, actually, yes. Arriving at a friend's flat, he finds the pal, Nick, missing, the girl next door (Liu) flirtatious, and endures calls from two rival gang bosses (Freeman, Kingsley), each of whom wants him (thinking he's Nick) to kill a man for them.

Meanwhile, a mysterious assassin (Willis) appears to be playing his own game...

The secret of this ingenious thriller lies not in what it tells you, but in what it leaves out. It's quirky, if not totally entertaining. Performances are just fine; even Hartnett is considerably less bland than usual.
