This musical spun round the life of entrepreneur and later circus king P T Barnum was much more popular in the UK than in its native America, remaining in the top 10 for weeks and grossing nearly £50 million to date. Upbeat, touching and engrossing by turns, it features Jackman in fine voice and catchy, lilting, toe-tapping songs that will have you singing long after you've watched the movie.
And the circus and its life are vividly recaptured by director Gracey and his team. All in all, it's a real throwback to the musical classics of Hollywood's golden era, and knocks the overrated La La Land into a cocked hat. Hats off, in fact, to all concerned.
